There are 161 million visually impaired people in the world. Out of these, 37 million are totally blind and 124 million have low vision. Another 153 million are blind due to want of corrective glasses.
90 per cent of these blind live in the rural areas of developing countries.
80 per cent of the world's blind are unnecessarily blind - i.e. their blindness can be cured.
Out of its 1.20 billion population, India has 15 million blind, out of which 3 million are children. 1.4 million children below the age of 15 are blind.
India has another 53 million visually impaired.
Every year, an additional 2 million Indians go blind, 62 per cent due to cataract.

India's national average CSR is 5,000. It is largely due to low CSR in Central, North and North-East Indian states, which suffer from abject poverty.
