Kamalnayan Bajaj Research Centre opens in Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai
The Sankara Nethralaya family and its well wishers got together for a very special occasion for the naming of “Kamalnayan Bajaj Research Centre.” Chairman Emeritus Dr. S. S. Badrinath and Chairman Dr. Bhaskaran extended a warm welcome to the visiting dignitaries. Dr. Madhavan pointed out the long association of the Bajaj family and Sankara Nethralaya and recalled how a breakfast meeting between Shri Niraj Bajaj and Dr. Badrinath paved the way to the donation towards the Kamalnayan Research Center by the eminent industrial house. He added that it was the philanthropic disposition of Shri Rahul Bajaj, Chairman, Bajaj group that made this research block a reality. Sankara Nethralaya was honoured to have two eminent bureaucrats Dr. Ramaswami, Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Science and Technology and Padmavibushan V. Krishnamurthy, Chairman, National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council, both known for their high caliber and integrity as the honoured guests of the evening.
Following Dr. Madhavan’s welcome address and honouring of the guests, the Chief Guest Dr. Ramasami and the guest of honour Padmavibushan V.Krishnamurty jointly opened the plaque announcing the renaming of the block as Kamlnayan Bajaj Research Centre.
In his speech, Shri Rahul Bajaj, Chairman, Bajaj Group, underlined the social responsibility of private enterprise to sustain and nurture institutions involved in public welfare. He recalled that Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore had expounded this philosophy in his writings almost a century ago and stated that it was so relevant today. He emphasised that bhakti (devotion) and samarpan (sacrifice) were the bedrock of any venture and were instrumental to the growth and success of Sankara Nethralaya. Shri Bajaj complimented the Vision Research Foundation for its highly productive research and the Sankara Nethralaya for being the biggest eye care facility in Asia providing high quality, low cost eye care to all sections of society. He underlined his personal belief in Sankara Nethralaya’s philosophy of Privatised Public Sector, which made his association with it very natural. Shri Bajaj closed his address with a down to earth remark that he was only doing his duty in supporting the efforts of the Vision Research Foundation.
Sri Venugopalaswami Trust and Smt. Rajamma Public Trust, Chennai donate generously to Sankara Eye Hospital, Pammal
Sankara Eye Hospital, an ISO 9001-2008 certified non-profit charitable state-of-the-art multi-specialty Ophthalmic Hospital was established in 1997 with a singular vision of providing high quality care to rich and poor. Camps are conducted in the villages of Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur district daily in which the villagers are screened for ailments of eye and further identified for surgical correction. The patients are brought to the base hospital at Pammal where the necessary surgery with Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) is performed with the best post-operative care. The patients are admitted one day before surgery and discharged the day after. A patient review takes place within 10 days at the village and again after a month after which they are prescribed with spectacles. So far, the hospital has performed about 1.50 lakh surgeries on rural poor.
In the function held at the hospital premises on June 11, 2011, Dr. Saroja Shankar, trustee, Sri Venugopalaswami Trust and Smt. Rajamma Public Trust, Chennai dedicated two sets of Pulse Oximeter and Multi Para Monitor worth Rs 1.80 lakhs to Sankara Eye Hospital, Pammal to strengthen the Operation Theatre, which would benefit the community. Dr. Balamurugan, Dr. Sapna Sai Prasad and Dr. Nirupama received the equipments and interacted with the donors. Prof. Venkataraman, a well-wisher and the staff of the hospital, also participated in the event.
Day-long clinic on Optometry
Eye Care today is dynamic with advances in both diagnosing eye ailments and their treatment emerging every day. To keep abreast with these changes and to share our experience and expertise with the medical community periodic medical education initiatives are organized.
Sankara College of Optometry, Bangalore along with the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry organised a day long clinical update in optometry on April 17, 2011. Leaders from the field of Optometry were invited as faculty and over 40 delegates from various parts of Southern India participated.
The urge to share has been picked up by Nirmal Ashram Eye Institute, which is managed by SECI. The hospital organised a CME under the aegis of the Dehradun Ophthalmic Society on June 26, 2011. The meeting saw delegates from the three neighbouring districts learn on the high volume cataract surgical care provided at the hospital and also on recent advances in diagnosing retinal diseases using the Spectral Optical Coherence Tomography.

The modern and technically superior Sankara Eye Hospital is making us proud with each passing day. The 225-bed eye hospital with 6 operation theatres had a high profile visitor in Shri Digambar Kamat, Chief Minister of Goa.
‘Height’ of our services!
It is our constant endeavour to expand our services to those who have no access to eye care. Our partner hospital, Nirmal Ashram Eye Institute, conducted a unique camp at Dharali, situated at a height of nearly 3,000 meters in the Himalayan range. Over 100 patients benefited from this outreach camp.

Impact India donates Mobile Eye Clinic to Bhojraj Hospital
(Impact India Foundation partnered with Silvassa-based Bhojraj Eye Hospital, part of the Sankara Eye Institutions by introducing Life Line Express Mobile Eye Clinic to provide eye care for poorest of poor). This air conditioned vehicle is well-equipped with ophthalmic diagnostic equipments and will focus in tribal area of Kaparada - Valsad along with Dang and Thane districts. In a simple ceremony on March 31, Ms Zelma Lazarus, CEO, Impact India Foundation, handed over the Life Line Express Mobile Eye Clinic to Bhojraj Eye Hospital in the presence of some of the social partners from Bank of Baroda, Lions Club of Silvassa and Indian Red Cross.
Tulsi Eye Hospital, Nasik gets an important visitor
Amb Preware, former Ambassador and member of the Advisory committee to the Federal Republic of Nigeria visited to Tulsi Eye Hospital on February 14, 2011. He was briefed about Tulsi Eye Hospital activities through audio-visual presentation and taken round of the hospital by Major (Rtd) D. K. Zarekar (Chief Executive Director).
Visit of Mr. John Bothamley - Four Acre Trust, UK
Mr. John Bothamley and Ms Elizabeth Lloyd of Four Acre Trust, UK visited Mission for Vision partner hospitals Sankara Eye Hospital, Pammal and Jaslok Community Ophthalmic Centre-Sankara Nethralaya in Chennai in January 2011. Mr. J. M. Chanrai and Mr. Mani showed them both the facilities. The duo was very happy with the extraordinary community work undertaken by Mission for Vision and its partner hospitals in India.
Mr. Bothamley and Four Acre Trust have been generously supporting Tulsi Chanrai Foundation’s eye programs for a long time.
