Mission for Vision’s Move to North India
Mission for Vision started the journey towards eradication of avoidable blindness way back in 1991 with one hospital in Coimbatore performing 600 surgeries annually. We also had a dream - a dream to provide accessibility to eye care to every Indian. This dream has been partially fulfilled with 13 hospitals in 8 States which will perform more than 1,60,000 free eye surgeries in 2010-11. This journey over 19 years has been extremely fulfilling - more than 1 million people have received the gift of vision.
As Mission for Vision begins the 20th year of operations, we want to dream again, a dream of becoming the largest eye care partnership in the world. This is our Vision 2020 - to partner with 25 eye hospitals in 20 States of India which will have a capacity to perform 5,00,000 free eye surgeries annually.
India has 12 million blind - the highest globally. Every year 2 million people go blind, 62% from cataract. The prevalence in Rural: 1.63%; Urban: 1.01%. In developed countries, the Cataract Surgical Rate (CSR) is close to 10,000 per million populations while in India the national average is about 5000.
The average is low due to the very low CSR is Central, North and North-East India. These States will be the focus of Mission for Vision over the next 10 years. Mission for Vision had initiated the process of movement to North India with partner hospitals in Rishikesh, West Bengal and Assam.
Mission for Vision’s 15th partner hospital will be Sankara Eye Hospital, Ludhiana Punjab. The hospital is located 200m off the National Highway NH 95 Ludhiana - Firozpur (via Moga) about 12 km from the Ludhiana Municipality outer limits. The construction activity commenced in Mar 11 and is expected to be completed by Dec 2011 so that the Hospital is ready to function from Mar 2012. The total land availability is about 2.1 acres with a plan for covered area of 50,000 sq. ft. The hospital is planned over 3 floors including the ground floor. The hospital would perform 12,000 eye surgeries annually.
MFV partner hospital has identified Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan for the next level of expansions.
In Kanpur 4 acre land is being made available through Dolphin Builders, who intend to develop a very large acreage with all facilities/ institutions in Kanpur. Their development proposal has been agreed by the Kanpur Development Authority and has been sent to State Govt. at Lucknow for final approval.
In Rajasthan, Land availability is being explored at Jaipur, Jodhpur or Udaipur.
