MFV's Gift of Vision brings back smiles
Seven-year-old Vaibhav Dhatrak was brought by the social workers to Tulsi Eye Hospital, Nasik with a problem of squint since birth. Due to lack of knowledge about the treatment modalities and poor eye care services, Vaibhav had failed to receive any treatment for deviation of his eyes. He was constantly teased in school by his friends, which lead to loss of confidence and self esteem. His academic performance was also negatively affected.
Vaibhav was successfully operated in the left eye and he could initiate his studies once again. His self esteem has also improved dramatically.
Fifty-two-year old Mrs. Lakashmamma, a resident of Chitoor district of Andhra Pradesh was brought from Papanaidupet screening camp to Jaslok Community Ophthalmic Centre (Sankara Nethralaya). Totally blind and deserted by her husband, she lived with her 15-year-old son and an aged mother, who helped her in the daily chores. At the hospital, doctors suggested a cornea transplant for left eye. After the transplantation, Lakashmamma regained 6/18 vision. When she came for final review, she could walk alone with any support. Happy to be back on her feet again, Lakashmamma expressed her gratitude and returned home.
Family with Cataract treated at Nirmal Ashram Eye Institute, Rishikesh
A family comprising of the mother with her three children were identified with cataract in camp at Uttarkashi by Nirmal Ashram Eye Institute. All were diagnosed with congenital zonular cataract. From the family history, the hospital realized that the mother’s elder sister, elder brother and all their babies were also affected with congenital cataract. This was the third generation to be affected with congenital cataract. All the 4 persons were taken to the hospital and successfully operated. The other members of the family were also screened and operated. All the children have recovered their vision and started attending school.
Kalabai Chimaji Kale, 65/F, was blind in the left eye for more than 3 years and was totally dependent on her son and grandson. She had no idea about what was to be done till she met Sakharam Dagadu Jadhav. Sakharam Jadhav was also suffering from cataract and had regained his sight after being operated at Tulsi Eye Hospital, Nasik. Sakharam Jadhav informed Kalabai about Tulsi Eye Hospital and how the hospital takes care of all the arrangements right from screening of the patients to transportation of the patients to the hospital and bringing back the patient to the village after successful surgery.
With the help of the social worker, Sakharam Jadhav organized the visit of Kalabai to a camp which was being conducted by Tulsi Eye Hospital. Kalabai Kale was diagnosed with cataract and was taken to the hospital. In the hospital she underwent all the necessary investigations and subsequently cataract surgery was performed.
While leaving the hospital, Kalabai Kale expressed her gratitude and affection to the team at Tulsi Eye Hospital for not only regaining the eye sight but all for all the services that were offered to her.
Nani, 9 months old female child from Chaudapalli, Andhra Pradesh was brought to Jaslok Community Ophthalmic Centre (Sankara Nethralaya) through a screening camp with a complaint of no vision in both the eyes. She was diagnosed with bilateral cataract and lensectomy surgery was done in both the eyes on 25th January 2010 and 2nd February 2010. During review, the child was found to be doing well and spectacles was given to her. Her progress would be monitored by the hospital for the next few years and subsequently when the eye tissue develops, she will be provided with intra-ocular lens.
Reena mogya bhilavi, 60/F, from Nandurbar, Maharashtra lived with her farmer son. For nearly a year, she had lost her eyesight and was dependant on her Son for her day to day activities. Bhojraj Eye Hospital social worker found Reena sitting at her doorstep during his visit to that village. He advised her to go to a screening camp that was being organized in that village. During preliminary screening, it was observed that she could not see anything but had perception of light. She was admitted in Bhojraj Eye Hospital for cataract surgery. After the surgery on the right eye, she was so happy that she asked for the surgery on the left eye to be done immediately which was done after a month. While leaving the hospital she said, “I will never forget your hospital and your work. Your hospital and doctors have given me my lost vision and new life to see a wonderful world. Now I am independent.” She has started her daily chores just like she would in her earlier days with zest and happiness.
