Sri Sankara Nethralaya, Tirupati
 |
| Following an invitation from the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam, (TTD), Sankara Nethralaya (SN) and the TTD signed a Memorandum of Agreement on April 25, 2010 for providing ophthalmology services to the TTD employees, devotees and pilgrims at Tirupati. The TTD has set up a separate non-profitable Charitable Trust - Sri Srinivasa Sankara Nethralaya (SSSN) Trust, to establish a eye care centre at the 2nd floor of the TTD’s Central Hospital in Tirupati on September 21, 2009. Dr. S. S. Badrinath, Chairman Emeritus, Sankara Nethralaya, described the moment as a historic day. “The opportunity to serve people at Tirupati is the recognition of three decades of hard work of all employees of Sankara Nethralaya,” he said. The expansion of services and personnel will also increase the number of patients being examined at the centre daily. At present, the SSSN examines around 20 patients every day. This is expected to rise to about 50. The Operation Theatre, expected to be completed in the next few months, will enable the centre to perform around 20 cataract surgeries every day. Mission for Vision would conduct outreach camps and bring them to SSSN for surgery. About 12-15 patients would be brought every week and for 2011-12, MFV has planned for 500 free eye surgeries.
